Global Warming - We can help fight it

Bangalore - better known for being a IT hub is where I have been living for more than 8 years now. It’s believed that one among the many reasons that it was initial chosen for the growth of IT was it pleasant-all-year-round climate. Sadly as is the case everywhere, this city is also getting hotter day by day, year after year thanks to its prosperity in every sense. And I am beginning to feel the increase in temperature every year and realized probably this is what global warming is all about. So I checked around for the meaning and believe I was right. Here is the accurate definition of global warming from Wikipedia
Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s near-surface air and oceans in recent decades and its projected continuation.
Anyway, once I began on this topic, I read around to understand some of the impacts and causes of global warming and discovered that we as the users of computers/laptops can do our bit to help the fight against global warming. These tips are released by Tufts University under their Tufts Climate Initiative.
• Turn off your computer at night and when you are not using it for several hours.
• Enable the Power Management feature for your monitor.
• Turn off your monitor when you are not using your computer for 15 minutes or longer.
• If you buy a new computer, consider a laptop. Laptops use only 1/4 the energy.
• If you buy a new monitor, consider a flat screen. They use only 1/3 the energy.
You can download the brochure here published by Tufts University which talks about various myths of computer usage.
And so I have finally learn to shut down my laptop (or hibernate) every night instead of the usual stand by mode, some immediate change in me after from all this learning ![]()
